"Tea Time" Watercolor Work in Progress
by Vicki
#1 - Drawing. I use a No.2 Berol Turquoise pencil. I try very hard not to get the drawing smeary & to keep the lines crisp. And I try to get the objects as acurate as possible. I use a "Miracle Rub" vinyl eraser - the best! It does not leave any ghosting! I draw on 100% cotton rag watercolor paper. This is Arches 140lb cold-pressed.
#2 - I add a yellow wash here & there where the light hits. I use cadmium yellow, but very diluted because it is so opaque.
#3 - I mix cadmium yellow with alizarin crimson. . .a pale wash of this goes all over the hands except for a few yellow highlighted areas. I drop-in puddles of green (sap green mixed with cad yellow), violet (ultrmarine blue mixed with alizarin). In the deepest dark aresa..cracks of hands, I use the violet mix with a little burnt sienna added to it. . .I make a pale sage wash (sap green, yellow & ultrmarine) and do the robe or dress. . .I use ultramarine & indigo for the spoon. I take the violet mix, add a little more blue and do the shadows on the plate & cup. I start painting the flowers...alizarin, cad yellow & sap green. . .
#4 - I deepen the shadows areas by adding more layers of the same colors. I take ultramarina blue and sap green to darken areas of the robe. This makes the plate & cup stand out. I add green stripes to the robe. I like skin a little more "glowing" and take a tiny bit of cadmium red to edges/curves of fingers. I wet the area and let it "float" in! It might not be right, but that's what I did. And "No!" That's not my robe! ;)
