Product review - Genesis Oil Paints

Someone on the ACEO forum mentioned "Genesis Oil Paints" and said that they were a heat drying paint that never dried until they were heated. That made me very curious, so I went and checked them out. The more I read about them, the more I just itched to try them. I bought a basic set and they were delivered very quickly considering that they crossed the country.

The first thing I noticed was the consistency. They are very buttery. You have to give them a little stir with a palette knife and as you stir them they get more buttery. There is a chemical term for this - but just believe me, they get buttery. They feel nice to use.

The next thing I noticed was the colours - they are very bright, almost what we expect from acrylics. And that brings me to the third thing... (which is also the 4th thing)

Sparrow painted in Genesis Oil Paints What do we like most about oils and least about acrylics? The blending time you have.

What do we like most about acrylics and least about oils? The drying time!

Genesis Oil Paints have the two "bests" without the two "worsts"! You can blend to your hearts content. You can go away and come back a few days later and you can STILL blend. I've been told that you can come back YEARS later and still blend, although I haven't tried this myself!

Then, just pull out your ray (oh, ok, heat) gun, shoot the painting for a couple of seconds - up to a couple of minutes depending on how thick your paint is - and it's DRY! Just like that. Then you can go layer over it just as you would an acrylic.

Other great things about them...

They come in little jars and you know how I love little jars. I would be waiting anxiously for one to empty just so I could have the jar - except they sell the empty jars so you can store any mixes you might make. I'm in heaven I tell you!

The colours stay the same when they are wet or dry, so you don't get a change in colour when they are heated.

Wiggly Eye painted in Genesis Oil Paints There are mediums that come with them - thinning medium, thick medium and glazing medium. I haven't tried them yet, they are in my next order!

Oh, the palette. Buy one of their palettes, they are only a few dollars and they have a lid which closes and locks so that when the cat runs over the table in the middle of the night she doesn't get paint on her paws! I'm buying some extra palettes in my next order because you don't have to clean them, you can leave the paint on them forever and it doesn't dry! (just don't accidently shoot your palette with your ray (ok, heat) gun!) So I'm going to have one palette for my greens, one for my flesh colours, one for my blues and so on, and they can all stack neatly on my shelf.

What else. Oh yes, because they don't dry I'm not losing nearly as many brushes as I use to because I forget to wash them before I go to bed. It's actually GOOD for the brushes! Works as a brush conditioner. I think my brushes are much happier now.

When you go and look at the prices you might think that they are a little on the high side. But they aren't because there is no waste, because it doesn't dry you are never throwing anything away and because they are in a jar you can get right to the bottom with none of the waste that is in a tube either. They go a long way as well. Since I got them I haven't used my "normal" oil paints at all. Maybe I'll sell all my old paints on eBay, you never know!

Let me know if you get the Genesis paints - I'd love to see what you do with them!
