Interview with Tamara Dozier

Hello Tamara, first tell us where you are from?

I was born in Chicago, Illinois, moved to Texas as a teen and lived there until my mid 20's but now live in Oklahoma.

How long have you been doing artwork - art cards?

LOL, my Mom says I started drawing as soon as I figured out crayons were to draw with and not to eat. I've been doing art cards for a few months now.

When did you first learn about art cards and what drew you to them.

I first heard about them on WetCanvas about a year ago and thought they were kind of cool. At that time though I just did not have to time to do them. Recently someone mentioned these cards on ebay and suggested I join the ACEO group. I checked it out, got excited about what I saw happening with the group and the cards and decided to jump in with both feet.

What mediums do you use?

I paint the cards in either acrylics or watercolor. Lately I've been added color pencil to a few and I really like the look I get.

When did you first start with those mediums? Do you use them on other art or just on art cards?

I've been painting with acrylics and watercolors for quite a few years. I've played with colored pencils in the past but until recently didn't really know what to do with them.

Where do you like to be when you do your art?

I do have a studio that was once an attached garage. I use that more for sculpting than painting. My painting ends up most of the time being done at the end of my dining room table. If I'm printing out giclees I'm then working in another room where we keep the huge printer and my art computer in. Heck, about 1/2 the house has some kind of creative stuff going on it at any time.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Inspiration comes to me in many ways. Something I see, something I dream, a song, a book, a friend. Life inspires me. I've learned to just let life guide me. That's one reason why I don't create just one type or style of art. Life just offers me so much to choose from.

My husband Randy is my biggest fan. He supports me in so many ways. We've only been married for 3 years but it feels like we been connected through the ages. He supports me in so many ways. It's because of Randy that I am able to explore my art full time. He shoulders the financial responsibilities so I can play and create and develop as an artist. Never before in my life have I had this type of support. I adore this man for this and for much more. Thank you babe for giving me this life.

I have 2 grown children. My daughter Shauna is 25 and my son Scott is 24. Both are also artists. My daughter is really more interested in playing in the dirt, plumbing, and construction than drawing and painting at this time in her life. My son is actively working with his art and plans to go back to school for 3D animation. They both are really cool people and both are talented in so many ways. I'm a proud Momma!

Are you self taught or have you had formal training?

Formal training, what's that? Would my Mom sitting me down at the kitchen table and asking me to draw her stuff while she cooked and cleaned be considered formal training? Self taught, self taught, self taught. Thanks Mom!

When you sit down to create... what are three things you cannot do without?

Quiet, good lighting and something to drink like hot tea, water, bourbon and coke.

When you buy art, what are your drawn too, what catches your eye and why do you have to have it?

Hmmmm, I find that I like colorful art and moody art. I like fantasy, surrealism and abstract. I don't care for photorealism although I do admire the skill it takes to create it. I like art that I can connect with, art that I can feel the artist through, feel that little bit of soul they put in their work. Some artists become mechanical in what they create and how they create it and I can feel that, it feels very sterile to me. Artists that have passion and struggle and fight with their art, artists that pour themselves emotionally into their art make their art alive. I feel that and I go "I want, I must have." I collect a variety of styles and subject matter. It's not always the image that attracts me as much as it's the "feeling" of the art.

Thank you Tamara.
